Driven by Fear

I was struck by a shocking reality today when I arrived at work only to find my tire deflated less than 30 minutes later. Apparently I had parked in front of some big shot’s apartment building and the security guard felt it upon himself to teach the parker (me in this case) “a lesson” – he said so himself when I confronted him. He was about to deflate another one when I spotted him from the balcony and ran down frantically. Can you believe someone would be so vengeful as to deflate someone’s tire for such a silly reason???
What makes things even worse is that the security guards for my office building, who watched me park and then confront the ass#@&*, just stood there! Even when he asked them who’s car it was, they hardly bothered to notify the receptionists. Our building holds 500 people, so it was bound to be one of the employees’ cars. I was unbelievably shocked at how someone can get away with something like this and the lack of respect I was treated with.
I ended up talking to the administration and fixing the tire, but the whole time, they were very hush-hush. They kept telling me they can’t get involved. And these are men that work in executive positions in the company. Wimps. My co-worker and I had more guts than any of the security and administration did – and we’re girls.
This apparently happens all the time in Lebanon. People fear their neighbors, under the guise of overly-lavish hospitality. They would rather tip-toe around an issue than confront it. Just like this ass#@&* (I don’t usually like using profanity on my blog, but there’s no other way to call him) who hardly got a frown from the security guards today. And to top it off, there are so many crazies who may just shoot you for parking in their spot! True story – happened a few years ago.
The fear comes from corruption and from the very people that have the most power in our country. Anyone that’s connected to them is suddenly immune and they can impose themselves any way they want because someone’s got their back. They will abuse this power just to appear powerful. It’s a real shame.
In a country that’s struggling with so much, is the only kind of stability we’ll ever find a fake one?
