The Writing’s on the Wall.

Driving past Sodeco Square this afternoon, I chanced upon a group of high-schoolers painting bright graffiti along the wall. I caught them right while they were having lunch.

The wall, with the words “Our rights are more than just ink on a paper” (in Arabic), is meant to spread awareness for Sesobel, a foundation that helps children and adults with mental disabilities. A few high schools around Lebanon are participating in this project.

Yazan Halwani, one of the youngest graffiti artists in the Middle East, was leading the group. The graffiti scene in Lebanon is booming and talented artists compete for wall space to leave their mark. Besides rapping alongside other big names in the urban scene, Yazan keeps busy graffiti-ing interiors of shops and houses, canvases, shoes and bags. He also gives instructive graffiti workshops. His style combines Arabic calligraphy and arabesques with urban western graffiti styles.

Watching this group at work, I suddenly wished I could join them. How fun!

    I love graffiti!

I would like to see one day some of the dirty walls in Beirut transformed into pretty ones by showing young talents or like this one creating awareness, but of course in an artistic way.

Welcome to My Blog!

Lorena's Epiphany was created one morning in 2006 and has joined me ever since. It's been my home-away-from-home and where I've been able to unleash my inner-most thoughts and musings. Hopefully one day I'll look back at this as an old lady and smile.
