Rants, exploits and obsessions are the stories written about in “Not that You Asked” by Steve Almond. I’ve just started reading it and I’m already cracking up. This guy is good. He doesn’t hold back and his remarks are very out-there and witty.
Here’s a peak into his book, taken from the first chapter (Oprah fans take note: this might hurt)
“Dear Oprah Winfrey,
I am writing to inform you that I cannot accept your kind offer to name this book as your October 2007 selection for Oprah’s Book Club. … The truth is, I don’t give a shit how many books you sell. I don’t care how much dough you give away, or how many famous people you make cry. At the end of the day, you’re a TV star. You show up on a tiny screen and give lonely people a place to park their emotions for an hour. You’re the world’s leading retailer of inspiration. You’re the Wal-Mart of Hope. …”
Wow. Sharp, eh? Don’t worry, this is what he later explains (to Oprah, in another letter) as written “under the influence of mild psychotropics”. He goes on to kiss her ass and ask her to reconsider his book. The way he writes is simply brilliant, so raw – and it’s been a long time that I’ve laughed while reading a book. Reading chapter 2 now. Look out for this one if you have a similar sense of humor.
